Coming of Age Day · Worksheet C1
Read the passage and answer the questions. (CEFR B1–B2)
1When Japan lowered its age of majority from 20 to 18 in April 2022, it ended a rule that had stood since 1876. Supporters argued that 18-year-olds could already vote, and that most developed countries treat 18 as the start of adulthood. Since the change, an 18-year-old can sign a phone contract or apply for a credit card without a parent's permission.
2Critics, however, worried that young people with little experience of money might become easy targets for dishonest sellers. So the government prepared lessons for high school students about contracts and common consumer traps. Meanwhile, the drinking and smoking age stayed at 20 for health reasons, so Japan now has two different lines for adulthood.
3The ceremony tells a similar story. Most cities chose to keep celebrating 20-year-olds, partly because 18-year-olds face university entrance exams in January. Many young people also say they prefer to celebrate after they have left high school and started a new chapter of life. In other words, the law says one thing, while custom and practical life say another. This raises a deeper question about whether adulthood is a legal status, a social role, or a personal feeling of responsibility.
