Maria	Hey, Sota! Do you want to come to the Cinco de Mayo festival after school?
Sota	Sure! It's Mexico's Independence Day, right?
Maria	Ha, everybody says that! But no. Independence Day is September 16.
Sota	Really? Then what happened on May 5?
Maria	In 1862, a small Mexican army beat the French army at a city called Puebla.
Sota	Wow. So it's a big holiday in Mexico, too?
Maria	Not really. Schools are closed, but most people go to work. Puebla has the biggest party.
Sota	That's strange. Why is it so big here in L.A.?
Maria	Mexican people in California started celebrating it way back in the 1860s. My grandma says it's about pride.
Sota	I like that. By the way, May 5 is Children's Day in Japan.
Maria	No way! What do you do on Children's Day?
Sota	We fly carp flags and eat rice cakes. Today I'll eat tacos instead!
