How Rainbows Form

— A meeting of sun, rain, and you —

After the rain, the sun comes out, and a rainbow appears in the sky. Its band of colors looks like magic. But a rainbow is really a beautiful trick of light, water, and your own eyes.

A rainbow needs two things: sunlight and raindrops. The light must come from behind you, while the rain falls in front of you. That is why we often see rainbows when the sun returns after a shower.

Sunlight looks white, but it is made of many colors. When light enters a raindrop, it bends. The drop acts like a tiny prism, splitting the white light into its colors, from red to violet.

The light then bounces inside the drop and comes back out toward you. Each color leaves at a slightly different angle. Millions of raindrops together send these colors to your eyes as one great arc.

This is why no two people see exactly the same rainbow. The colors you see come from your own position. If you move, the rainbow moves too, and you can never reach its end.

So a rainbow is not really a thing in the sky. It is a meeting of sunlight, rain, and you, made fresh just for your eyes. A fitting end to one hundred mornings of small wonders. Thank you for reading.

01After the rain, the sun comes out, and a rainbow appears in the sky. Its band of colors looks like magic. But a rainbow is really a beautiful trick of light, water, and your own eyes.

02A rainbow needs two things: sunlight and raindrops. The light must come from behind you, while the rain falls in front of you. That is why we often see rainbows when the sun returns after a shower.

03Sunlight looks white, but it is made of many colors. When light enters a raindrop, it bends. The drop acts like a tiny prism, splitting the white light into its colors, from red to violet.

04The light then bounces inside the drop and comes back out toward you. Each color leaves at a slightly different angle. Millions of raindrops together send these colors to your eyes as one great arc.

05This is why no two people see exactly the same rainbow. The colors you see come from your own position. If you move, the rainbow moves too, and you can never reach its end.

06So a rainbow is not really a thing in the sky. It is a meeting of sunlight, rain, and you, made fresh just for your eyes. A fitting end to one hundred mornings of small wonders. Thank you for reading.

光が雨粒で曲がる現象をrefraction(屈折)、色に分かれることを dispersion(分散)と呼びます。Day11(夕焼け)やDay71(海の青)、Day60(星)とも「光の科学」でつながりますね。
