— Why won't it ever go away? —

Plastic is everywhere. We use it for bottles, bags, toys, and phones. We make huge amounts of it each year. It is cheap, light, and strong. But plastic has one big problem: it almost never goes away.

Most natural things rot and disappear over time. Tiny living things, like bacteria, eat them and break them down. A piece of fruit may rot in days. A leaf may vanish in a season. This natural process keeps the Earth clean.

Plastic is different. It is made by people from chemicals, mostly from oil. Plastic has only existed for about a hundred years. Nature has never seen these materials before. So bacteria do not know how to eat them. Plastic just stays and stays.

Scientists think a plastic bottle can last for hundreds of years. Sunlight may slowly break it into smaller and smaller pieces. But these tiny bits, called microplastics, do not truly disappear.

These small pieces are now found everywhere. They are in the deepest seas and on the highest mountains. They are even inside fish, and in the water we drink. Scientists are worried about what this means for our health.

So the plastic fork you use for five minutes may last for five hundred years. That is why using less plastic, and reusing it, matters so much for our planet.

01Plastic is everywhere. We use it for bottles, bags, toys, and phones. We make huge amounts of it each year. It is cheap, light, and strong. But plastic has one big problem: it almost never goes away.

02Most natural things rot and disappear over time. Tiny living things, like bacteria, eat them and break them down. A piece of fruit may rot in days. A leaf may vanish in a season. This natural process keeps the Earth clean.

03Plastic is different. It is made by people from chemicals, mostly from oil. Plastic has only existed for about a hundred years. Nature has never seen these materials before. So bacteria do not know how to eat them. Plastic just stays and stays.

04Scientists think a plastic bottle can last for hundreds of years. Sunlight may slowly break it into smaller and smaller pieces. But these tiny bits, called microplastics, do not truly disappear.

05These small pieces are now found everywhere. They are in the deepest seas and on the highest mountains. They are even inside fish, and in the water we drink. Scientists are worried about what this means for our health.

06So the plastic fork you use for five minutes may last for five hundred years. That is why using less plastic, and reusing it, matters so much for our planet.

自然に分解される性質をbiodegradable(生分解性)と呼びます。

It matters.(それは大事だ)
