Today, when a computer does not work correctly, we say there is a "bug" in the program. The word is so common that many people use it without thinking. But did you know that one famous early computer bug was actually a real, living insect?

The story comes from 1947. At Harvard University, a team of engineers was using a huge early computer called the Mark II. It was so big that it filled a whole room. One day, the machine suddenly stopped working correctly. The workers checked everything, but they could not find the problem.

Finally, one engineer opened a part of the machine and discovered something strange: a moth was stuck inside. The little insect had flown between the metal parts and caused the system to fail. Carefully, they took the moth out and taped it into the team's logbook with a note that said, "First actual case of bug being found."

One of the engineers on that team was Grace Hopper, a brilliant computer scientist. Thanks to her stories, this funny event became famous around the world. People had already used the word "bug" for machine problems even before 1947, but the moth made the term truly unforgettable.

The original page from the logbook, with the real moth still attached, is now kept in a museum in the United States. So every time we hear about a computer bug, we are also remembering one small moth from long ago.

01Today, when a computer does not work correctly, we say there is a "bug" in the program. The word is so common that many people use it without thinking. But did you know that one famous early computer bug was actually a real, living insect?

02The story comes from 1947. At Harvard University, a team of engineers was using a huge early computer called the Mark II. It was so big that it filled a whole room. One day, the machine suddenly stopped working correctly. The workers checked everything, but they could not find the problem.

03Finally, one engineer opened a part of the machine and discovered something strange: a moth was stuck inside. The little insect had flown between the metal parts and caused the system to fail. Carefully, they took the moth out and taped it into the team's logbook with a note that said, "First actual case of bug being found."

First actual case of bug being found."(初の「バグ」実物発見ケース)

04One of the engineers on that team was Grace Hopper, a brilliant computer scientist. Thanks to her stories, this funny event became famous around the world. People had already used the word "bug" for machine problems even before 1947, but the moth made the term truly unforgettable.

05The original page from the logbook, with the real moth still attached, is now kept in a museum in the United States. So every time we hear about a computer bug, we are also remembering one small moth from long ago.
