Long, long ago, the Jade Emperor wanted a way to count the years. "Let's have a great race!" he said. "The first twelve animals to cross the river will each get a year." The Cat and the Rat were good friends, but they were not good swimmers. "Please wake me up on the day of the race," said the Cat. But on the morning of the race, the Rat did not wake the Cat up. The Rat asked the kind Ox, "Can I ride on your back?" The Ox said, "Sure!" and swam across the river. Just before the finish, the Rat jumped off the Ox and came in first! So the Rat became number one, and the Ox became number two. The strong Tiger fought the fast river and came in third. The Rabbit hopped across on stones and a floating log. It was fourth. The Dragon could fly, but it came in fifth. "Why are you late?" asked the Emperor. "I stopped to make rain for thirsty people, and I helped the Rabbit," said the Dragon. The Horse was about to finish, but the Snake was hiding on its leg. The Snake jumped out, and the Horse got scared. So the Snake was sixth and the Horse was seventh. The Sheep, the Monkey and the Rooster worked together on a raft. They came in eighth, ninth and tenth. The Dog loved playing in the water, so it was eleventh. The Boar got hungry, ate lunch and took a nap. It came in last. And the Cat? It woke up too late! That is why the Cat is not in the zodiac. And that is why cats still chase rats today!
The Cat overslept on the day of the race. That is why the Cat is not in the zodiac.
