Sota	Wow, there are so many people here! What is this festival?
Maya	It's Juneteenth. We celebrate the end of slavery in Texas.
Sota	Juneteenth? That's a funny word.
Maya	It's June plus nineteenth. On June 19, 1865, people in Texas heard they were free.
Sota	But I learned about Lincoln's proclamation in 1863.
Maya	Right. It took two and a half years to reach Texas.
Sota	Really? That's a long time.
Maya	And this park is special. Freed people bought this land in 1872.
Sota	So they made their own place to celebrate. That's amazing.
Maya	Here, try this. It's strawberry soda.
Sota	It's really red! Why red?
Maya	Red foods are a Juneteenth tradition. Some people say red means strength and joy.
Sota	Thanks, Maya. I'll tell my friends in Japan about this day.
