1Many people believe that true creativity begins from nothing. According to this view, an artist who copies others is not really creative, and a student who imitates a master will never find a personal voice. This belief is popular, but it misunderstands how most creative people actually learn.

2Look at how a child learns to draw or a beginner learns to play music. They start by copying: tracing a favorite character, or playing a well-known song note by note. Through copying, they discover how lines, colors, and sounds work together. Without such a foundation, it is hard to know which rules one is following or breaking. Great artists of the past often spent years copying the works of those who came before them, and many teachers still ask students to do the same.

3Copying alone, however, is not enough. The important step comes when the learner begins to change what has been copied, perhaps by mixing two styles, altering a rhythm, or applying an old technique to a new subject. A young musician, for example, may begin with a familiar melody and then dare to add a new ending. It is in these small changes that a personal style slowly appears. In other words, imitation is the starting point of creativity, not its enemy.

4There is a real danger, of course. A person who only imitates, and who presents another's work as his own, is not being creative and may harm the original artist. Respect for the work of others is therefore essential, and it is important to make clear what one has borrowed.

5In conclusion, creativity grows out of what we have absorbed from others. By copying with care, changing with courage, and being honest about our sources, we can move from imitation toward something truly our own.

4 Model summary

Imitation is often thought to be the enemy of creativity, but it is actually where creativity begins. Learners gain a foundation by copying, and personal style appears as they change what they copied. However, presenting others' work as one's own is wrong, so borrowing must be acknowledged.
