Yose is a small theater where rakugo storytellers and other comic acts perform almost every day.
Yose is a small theater for traditional comic performance. The main acts are rakugo storytellers, who sit alone on a cushion and play every character in a story. Between them come other acts, such as manzai comedy duos, magic and juggling. Regular shows run almost every day, and you can usually just pay at the door and walk in.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
A yose is a small theater where you can watch rakugo, Japan's traditional comic storytelling, almost every day of the year. Tokyo has four of these regular theaters, in Ueno, Shinjuku, Asakusa and Ikebukuro. A show lasts several hours, and more than a dozen performers appear one after another.
Most are rakugo storytellers, who sit on a cushion with only a folding fan and a small cloth and act out every character themselves. Between them come what are called iromono, other acts like manzai comedy duos, magic or juggling. The lineup usually changes every ten days.
The last performer of the day is the headliner, called the tori, and the whole program builds up to that act. What I like about yose is how relaxed it is. You can walk in partway through, and at many theaters you can even have a snack in your seat. It feels less like a formal theater and more like a neighborhood hangout.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QCan I enjoy it if I don't understand Japanese?
ARakugo is honestly hard without Japanese, because most of the jokes are in the words. Some storytellers give shows in English, so look for those first. Acts like magic and juggling are easy to enjoy in any language.
QDo I need to buy a ticket in advance?
AUsually not for the regular daily shows. You pay at the door and go in, even after the show has started. Special events and shows with very popular performers can sell out, though.
QWhy does the storyteller only use a fan and a cloth?
AThe fan and cloth can stand for almost anything, like chopsticks, a pipe, a letter or a wallet. The idea is that the audience fills in the rest with their imagination.

Background
