Yakiniku is Japanese barbecue: you grill small pieces of meat yourself at the table and dip them in sauce.

At a yakiniku restaurant each table has its own grill, and you order plates of thinly sliced beef, pork, chicken and offal, cook them piece by piece and dip them in a sweet soy-based sauce. Rice, kimchi and a salad usually come alongside. It is a lively, smoky, sociable meal, popular for celebrations and company outings, and one of the most common ways Japanese people eat beef.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Yakiniku literally means grilled meat, and it is the Japanese form of tabletop barbecue. You sit around a gas or charcoal grill built into the table, order plates of bite-sized meat, mostly beef, and cook each piece yourself for a minute or two before dipping it in a sweet, garlicky soy sauce and eating it with rice.

The cuts have their own names, short rib, tongue, skirt, and offal lovers can order hearts, intestines and more. The style grew out of Korean grilled meat and is generally said to have been developed largely by Korean residents of Japan after the Second World War, then spread nationwide and took on a Japanese character of its own, with thinner slices, lighter marinades and a strong focus on beef quality.

Today it is a favorite for birthdays, for teams celebrating a deal, and for families on a Sunday. My advice is to let the person who knows the grill manage the meat and not to burn the tongue.

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QWhat's the difference between yakiniku and Korean barbecue?

AThey are close relatives. Japanese yakiniku uses thinner slices, often lightly marinated or just salted, dips them in sauce after cooking, and eats them with rice rather than wrapped in lettuce. Side dishes are fewer. Korean barbecue in Japan is treated as a slightly different cuisine and labeled as such.

QWho is supposed to do the grilling?

AIn a group, often the youngest member or the most junior colleague ends up managing the grill, and doing it well is a small social skill. Among friends and family everyone grabs what they like. Do not put all the meat on at once; grill a few pieces at a time.

QWhy does everyone smell of smoke afterward?

ABecause the meat is grilled at your table. Many restaurants have hoods over each grill and some offer a spray for your coat, but the smell is part of the experience. People joke that they can tell who had yakiniku on the train home.

Phrases you can use

  • You grill it yourself at the table.
  • Flip it once and take it off quickly.
  • Dip it in the sauce, then eat it with rice.
  • Let's start with the tongue with salt.
  • The all-you-can-eat course here is ninety minutes.
  • Your clothes will smell of smoke afterward.

Background
