Tameshiwari is the art of breaking boards or tiles with a single karate strike.
Tameshiwari means "test breaking." In karate and some other martial arts, people break wooden boards, roof tiles or blocks with a punch, a kick or the edge of the hand. It's usually done at demonstrations, dojo events or tests, not in everyday practice. The goal is to show that you can put all your power into one small point at exactly the right moment, not just that you're strong.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
When people think of karate, many of them picture someone breaking a stack of boards with one chop. In Japanese, this is called tameshiwari, which means "test breaking." It does happen, but it's not what karate students do every day. Most practice is basics, kata and sparring.
Breaking is usually saved for demonstrations, dojo festivals or special tests, and children sometimes try it with a thin board held by an adult. What surprises people is that it's not mainly about muscle. A board breaks along the grain, so the angle matters.
You also have to hit through the target, not just at its surface, and keep your wrist and fingers tight. If you hesitate, it hurts and the board stays in one piece. That's why teachers say it tests your focus and timing as much as your power. Personally, I think it's a good way to show that confidence and correct technique can beat raw strength.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QAre the boards fake or specially prepared?
AThey're usually real wood, but the thickness and the direction of the grain are chosen for the person's level. Boards for children are thin. It's not a trick, but it's also not as superhuman as it looks.
QDoesn't it hurt your hand?
AIt can, especially if you hold back at the last second. Students learn the correct fist or hand shape first, and teachers decide when someone is ready to try.

Background
