Puro yakyu is Japanese professional baseball, famous for organized, non-stop crowd chanting.

Japanese professional baseball has twelve teams in two leagues, playing from late March to October with a championship series at the end. Team names usually include the corporate owner, often alongside a city or region. The atmosphere is the distinctive part: organized cheering sections, trumpets, drums and a different song for each batter.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Japanese professional baseball has twelve teams in two leagues, and the season runs from late March to October, ending in a championship series between the two league winners. The first thing visitors notice is the names: teams carry the name of the company that owns them, not just the city, so you get a newspaper, a railway, a food company and a mobile phone carrier competing on the same league table.

The second thing is the noise. Each team has an organized cheering section with trumpets and drums, and most regular players have their own song, which the home cheering section sings while he bats, standing, for the whole at-bat, and then sits when the side changes.

Nobody sings for the away team's batters, and the away fans are seated together in their own block doing the same thing in reverse. Beer is carried through the stands by young staff with kegs on their backs. It is loud, organized, and completely unlike watching baseball anywhere else.

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QShould I cheer for both teams?

ANo, and it would be confusing. Seating is divided, the home section cheers only when its own team bats, and the away section does the same. Pick a side, sit in that block, and follow what the people around you are doing.

QCan I bring food in?

AUsually yes, though cans and bottles are often refused and drinks are poured into paper cups at the gate. Many people bring a bento. Inside, staff walk the stands selling beer from kegs on their backs.

QHow is the game itself different?

AThe rules are nearly the same, but games can end in a tie after twelve innings in the regular season, the ball and strike zone differ slightly, and sacrifice bunts and small-ball tactics are used far more than in the American game.

Phrases you can use

  • Most regulars have their own song.
  • We only cheer when our team bats.
  • The teams are named after companies.
  • The beer sellers carry kegs on their backs.

Background
