Kobe is a port city west of Osaka, opened to foreign trade in 1868 and rebuilt after the 1995 earthquake.

Kobe is squeezed between a mountain range and the sea, so the built-up area is only a few kilometers wide and you can see both from most streets. It opened to foreign trade in 1868 and kept a visible foreign quarter of Western houses. In January 1995 an earthquake killed more than 6,400 people across the region and flattened much of the city; what visitors see today was largely rebuilt after that.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Kobe has an unusual shape that explains a lot about it. A mountain range comes almost down to the sea, so the city is a long strip only a few kilometers deep, and from most streets you can see the hills on one side and the harbor on the other.

It was one of the ports opened to foreign trade in 1868, and it kept a good deal of its old foreign residential area — a hillside of Western-style houses that people visit today. Foreign trade also left the food: Kobe is where a lot of Japan's bread, coffee and Western confectionery culture took hold, and Kobe beef is the name most people abroad know.

The part that matters most locally, though, is 1995. On the morning of January 17 a major earthquake struck the area, killing more than 6,400 people across the region, collapsing an elevated expressway and burning out whole districts. The city was rebuilt, and the date is marked every year. If you visit the memorial by the harbor, one section of the damaged quay was deliberately left as it fell.

神戸こうべkobethe port city between mountain and sea, rebuilt after an earthquake

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QWhat is Kobe beef exactly?

ABeef from a specific bloodline of Tajima cattle raised in Hyogo prefecture, certified under strict grading rules. Some beef sold abroad under the name is not the certified product.

QCan you still see earthquake damage?

AAlmost nowhere, by design. The exception is a preserved section of the damaged quay at the harbor memorial park, kept as it was on the day.

QHow is it different from Osaka?

AHalf an hour apart and quite different in feel. Kobe is smaller, hillier, quieter, and its history is maritime and international rather than mercantile and inland.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHKobe's port has only existed since 1868.

FACTA harbor here goes back to ancient times as the port of Hyogo; what opened in 1868 was the modern international port. Much of today's cityscape dates from after the 1995 earthquake.

Background
