Karoshi means death from overwork, a Japanese word that entered English dictionaries.
Karoshi covers deaths from stroke or heart attack caused by long hours, and suicide caused by work. It is a recognized category for workers' compensation, with thresholds in overtime hours. In fiscal 2024 a record 1,304 claims for overwork-related illness or death were approved, most of them for mental illness. A 2014 law made prevention a government duty, and since 2019 the law has capped overtime.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
Karoshi is a Japanese word that has made its way into English dictionaries. It means death caused by overwork, and it covers two things: strokes and heart attacks brought on by long hours, and suicide caused by work, which is sometimes called karo-jisatsu. It is not a figure of speech.
It is an administrative category, with guidelines saying that around eighty hours of overtime a month over several months indicates a link to the work. In the 2024 fiscal year a record 1,304 claims for overwork-related illness or death were approved, including cases that did not end in death, and for the first time over a thousand of them were for mental illness rather than physical collapse.
Japan has responded: a 2014 act made prevention a state responsibility and requires an annual white paper, and from 2019 overtime has a legal ceiling of forty-five hours a month in principle. Hours have fallen. Whether the culture behind them has changed is a separate question, and one Japanese people argue about.

As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QIs it really a legal category?
AYes. A family can claim workers' compensation and the labor bureau decides whether overwork caused the death, using criteria that include overtime hours, irregular shifts and workload changes.
QAre Japanese working hours still the longest in the world?
ANo. Average annual hours have fallen below several OECD countries, partly because part-time work has grown. The problem now is concentrated: long hours fall heavily on particular sectors and on full-time regular employees.
QWhat changed after the 2015 Dentsu case?
AThe death of a young employee at a major advertising agency, recognized as karoshi, forced the issue into national politics and helped produce the 2019 overtime cap. Companies now track hours much more closely.
