jigoku meguria tour of boiling hot spring pools known as hells
Standard

Jigoku meguri is a tour of boiling hot spring pools, or "hells," that are for looking, not bathing.

Jigoku means hell, and in hot spring towns, it's the name for places where boiling water, steam, and mud come out of the ground. They were too hot to use, so people called them hells. Jigoku meguri means going around these spots to look at them. The most famous tour is in Beppu, Oita, where you can see a cobalt-blue pond, a red pond, and a geyser.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Jigoku means hell, which sounds like a strange word for a hot spring. But in volcanic areas, there are places where steam, boiling water, and hot mud pour out of the ground. Few plants could grow there, and you couldn't get close, so people called them hells. Jigoku meguri means visiting these spots one after another, just to look.

The best-known course is in Beppu, in Oita Prefecture. There, Umi Jigoku, or Sea Hell, is a pond of bright cobalt-blue water, and Chinoike Jigoku, or Blood Pond Hell, is filled with red, hot mud. Another one, Tatsumaki Jigoku, is a geyser that shoots out hot water at regular intervals.

In 2009, four of Beppu's hells were named a national Place of Scenic Beauty, the first hot springs to get that title. You can't bathe in them, but you can try eggs cooked in the hot spring nearby. I think it's a great way to see the raw power of the volcanic land that gives Japan its onsen.

地獄めぐりじごくめぐりjigoku meguria tour of boiling hot spring pools known as hells

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QCan I take a bath in the hells?

ANo. The water is often close to boiling, and visitors stay behind fences. But there are plenty of ordinary hot springs nearby where you can take a bath.

QWhy are the ponds such different colors?

AIt depends on what's dissolved in the water and mud, and on the temperature. That's why one pond looks blue, another red, and another milky white.

QAre there hells outside Beppu?

AYes. Unzen in Nagasaki and Noboribetsu in Hokkaido also have steaming areas called jigoku. In Noboribetsu, the valley is called Jigokudani, or Hell Valley.

Phrases you can use

  • It's called a hell, but it's really just a very hot spring.
  • You can't bathe here. The water is almost boiling.
  • Each hell has its own color.
  • Let's try the eggs cooked in the hot spring.
  • Be careful. The steam is really hot.

Background
