Ikaho onsen is in Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture, on the slopes of Mount Haruna. The center of the town is a stone staircase of 365 steps, lined with inns, souvenir shops and old-style shooting galleries. It has two kinds of water: a brownish spring that contains iron, and a newer clear one. It's an easy trip from Tokyo, so many people go for a night or even a day.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
Ikaho onsen is a hot spring town in Gunma Prefecture, within easy reach of Tokyo. What makes it different from other hot spring towns is its stone steps. A staircase of 365 steps runs straight up through the middle of the town, and inns, shops and small shooting galleries line both sides.
It is said the stone-step town was laid out in the late 1500s, and today the steps also carry hot water, which runs underneath them to the inns. There are two kinds of water here. The older spring is called kogane no yu, or golden water, because the iron in it turns brown when it meets the air.
The newer one, shirokane no yu, or silver water, is clear. The novelist Tokutomi Roka loved Ikaho, and there is a museum about him in the town. Walking up the steps in the evening, with the lanterns lit, is one of my favorite things to do in Gunma.

As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QDo I have to stay overnight to use the baths?
ANo. There are public bathhouses, and some inns let day visitors use their baths for a fee. Staying overnight lets you enjoy the steps after dark, though.
QWhy is the water brown?
AThe golden water has iron in it. It comes out of the ground clear, but the iron changes color when it touches the air, so it turns brown.

Background
