Higasa is a parasol, an umbrella for the sun, which many people carry in Japanese summers.
A higasa is an umbrella made to block sunlight, not rain. In Japan, many people carry one in summer to stay cooler and to protect their skin from the sun. For a long time it was seen as something for women, but in 2019 the Ministry of the Environment started encouraging everyone, men included, to use one to prevent heatstroke. Many today work for both sun and rain.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
Visitors to Japan in summer are often surprised to see people walking with umbrellas on a perfectly sunny day. These are higasa, or parasols, made to block sunlight rather than rain. In many Western countries, you rarely see anyone using one, but in Japan they're a normal part of summer.
One reason is that many people want to avoid sunburn and tanning. The bigger reason today is the heat. Japanese summers have become very hot and humid, and heatstroke is a serious concern. In 2019, the Ministry of the Environment began encouraging everyone, men included, to use parasols.
It said a parasol can lower the heat index by about one to three degrees, and in its tests people sweated about seventeen percent less. Since then, the phrase higasa danshi, or "parasol guys," has become familiar. Many parasols now work in both sun and rain, so people carry one all year. I think it's simply a smart way to deal with the summer, not a fashion statement.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QIsn't that just an umbrella?
AIt looks like one, but it's made to block sunlight and UV rays, often with a dark lining inside. Many work for both sun and rain, so you can use one all year.
QDo men really use them?
AMore and more do. In 2019 the Ministry of the Environment started telling everyone, men included, to use one against heatstroke, and the phrase higasa danshi, or "parasol guys," caught on.

Background
