A gamaguchi is a small purse with a metal clasp that snaps shut, named after a toad's mouth.

A gamaguchi is a purse with a metal frame at the top that you open by twisting two little knobs. When it opens, it looks like a wide toad's mouth, which is where the name comes from. The style is said to have come from Europe in the late 1800s. Today, ones made with kimono fabric are popular souvenirs.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Have you ever seen a little purse that closes with a satisfying click? In Japan, it's called a gamaguchi. Gama means "toad" and kuchi means "mouth." When you twist the two metal knobs and open it, the frame spreads wide, just like a toad opening its mouth. The design itself was not born in Japan.

It is said to have come from Europe after Japan opened up in the late 1800s, but Japanese makers soon made it their own. There's also a fun bit of wordplay. The Japanese word for frog, kaeru, sounds the same as the word for "come back," so a purse that looks like a frog is said to bring your money back to you.

Older people often used gamaguchi for coins, and many people remember a grandparent's purse snapping open at the shop counter. Today you can find them in bright kimono fabrics and cute prints. I think they make a great souvenir because they're small, useful, and very Japanese in feel.

がま口がまぐちgamaguchia clasp purse that opens wide like a toad's mouth

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QIs it only for coins?

ANo. The classic small ones are coin purses, but the same clasp is used on wallets, pouches, and even handbags. The clasp makes it easy to see everything inside at once.

QIsn't this the same as a European clasp purse?

AThe basic design is the same, and it is said to have come from Europe. What feels Japanese is the name, the frog luck pun, and the fabrics, like kimono silk and tenugui cotton.

Background
