Buraku discrimination targets Japanese people because of where they or their ancestors lived, not because of any visible difference.
Under the Edo-period status system, some groups, often linked to work involving death or leather, were placed below or outside the main status groups. The status was abolished in 1871, but discrimination against people whose families were linked to those communities continued, mainly in marriage and employment. A 2016 law made ending it a responsibility of national and local government. There is no visible marker of any kind.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
This is difficult to explain because there is nothing to point at. Buraku discrimination is directed at Japanese people who are indistinguishable from anyone else in appearance, language, religion and name.
Under the Edo-period status system, some groups, often linked to work involving death or leather, were placed below or outside the main status groups, and their descendants and communities were stigmatized. The status categories were abolished in 1871, but the discrimination continued, mainly in marriage, where families investigated a partner's background, and in hiring.
Public programs improved living conditions from 1969 to 2002. Today a major concern is online information that identifies communities, and a 2016 law made ending discrimination a public responsibility. Many younger people have never heard of it. When explaining it, I avoid naming places, because that itself can cause harm.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QHow would anyone know?
AThey cannot, from meeting a person. Historically it was done by checking family registers or old address records, which is why access to those records was restricted, and why online information identifying communities is a central concern today.
QIs this the same as caste?
AThe comparison is often made and it is imperfect. Ideas of ritual impurity played a part historically, but no religious doctrine upholds it today and there is no ongoing ritual system. It is better described as a status distinction abolished more than a century ago whose social effects did not disappear with it.
QDoes it still affect people today?
ALess than in the past, and it varies by region and generation. Opposition to marriage still occurs, and information posted online has caused new harm. Surveys by local governments continue to find some people who say they would object.

Background
