A zabuton is a flat square cushion for sitting on the floor, and there are manners for using it.
A zabuton is a thick, flat cushion, roughly two feet square, that you sit on when a room has no chairs. It softens the tatami for kneeling or sitting cross-legged. In a formal setting the host lays one out for each guest, and you wait to be invited before sitting, do not stand on it, and do not move it around. It has a front and a back, and hosts notice.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
A zabuton is the answer to a simple problem: how to sit comfortably in a room with no chairs. It is a square cushion, thick with cotton, that you place on the tatami and sit on with your knees folded or your legs crossed. Every household has a stack of them in a cupboard, plain ones for family and better ones for guests.
What visitors do not expect is that a cushion comes with etiquette. In a formal visit you do not sit until the host invites you, and you slide onto the cushion from the side or the back rather than stepping on it. You never stand on a zabuton or push it around with your foot.
Each cushion has a front, the side with no seam, which should face the sitter's knees, and a top, where the tufted thread is. Rakugo storytellers perform on one, and sumo fans famously throw theirs after an upset, which is discouraged but still happens.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QHow do I tell the front of a zabuton?
ALook for the side with no seam. A zabuton is sewn on three sides and folded on the fourth, and the folded edge faces the front, toward your knees. The side with the little tuft of thread in the center is the top. Most hosts set it correctly for you.
QWhy can't I stand on it? It's just a cushion.
ABecause it is offered to you as a seat, and standing on it treats the host's hospitality like a doormat. The same logic applies to moving it: the host placed it where they wanted you. If you need to shift, lift it with your hands.
QMy legs go numb. Can I sit cross-legged?
AUsually yes for men, and increasingly for everyone, unless it is a very formal occasion. Say a word of apology and shift; hosts understand that foreigners are not used to kneeling. A small folding stool that fits under your knees is another option.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHA zabuton is just a pillow you can sit or stand on anywhere.
FACTIt is a seat with a front, a top and a set of manners; standing on it or kicking it into place is a small but visible breach of courtesy in a Japanese home.

Background
