Howaito de, or White Day, is March 14th, when men in Japan return gifts for Valentine's Day chocolate.
In Japan, Valentine's Day is when women give chocolate. White Day, a month later on March 14th, is when men return the favor, usually with candy, marshmallows or white chocolate. It was created by the Japanese confectionery industry around 1980 and has no Western original. It spread from Japan to South Korea, Taiwan and China.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
White Day is a good example of something Japan is often assumed to have imported but actually invented. In most countries Valentine's Day is one day and both sides give. In Japan the custom that took hold was that women give chocolate to men, which left the confectionery industry an obvious opening: a second day, a month later, for the men to give something back.
That is White Day, March 14th, promoted by the Japanese confectionery association from around 1980, and the name is usually explained by the white of sugar and marshmallow. Because it was designed as a return gift, an etiquette grew around it that the return should be worth more than what was received, sometimes stated as two or three times, which is marketing rather than rule, and which many office workers found a burden when obligation chocolate was handed around the whole office.
The custom traveled: South Korea, Taiwan and China observe it. Recently many Japanese workplaces have dropped office chocolate altogether, and with it the return obligation, so the day is quieter than it was.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QSo this doesn't exist in the West?
AIt does not. White Day is Japanese, created by the confectionery industry, and it spread from Japan to several neighboring countries rather than the other way round.
QIs the three-times-back rule real?
AIt is a marketing phrase that people half-believe. There is no rule, but returning something visibly cheaper than what you received is considered poor form.
QWhat do men actually give?
ACookies, marshmallows, white chocolate or baked sweets for obligation returns; for a partner, often something that is not food at all.

Background
