The shape is similar because both are steel lattice towers, but Tokyo Tower was taller and weighs only about half as much, because steel and welding had improved in the seventy years between them, and because it had to stand through earthquakes and typhoons.
Broadcasting moved to Skytree in 2012. What remains is the view and the meaning. Many older Japanese people talk about it as proof that the country was going to be all right. I like it best from a side street in the evening, when it appears above the buildings unexpectedly.

QIs it worth going up now that Skytree exists?
AThey give you different things. Skytree is twice as high and you look down on a grid of lights. Tokyo Tower is low enough that you can still see individual streets and rooftops, which many people find more interesting.

豆知識Background
正式名称は「日本電波塔」で、東京タワーは通称である。設計は早稲田大学教授の内藤多仲らによる。内藤は「塔博士」と呼ばれ、名古屋テレビ塔や通天閣の二代目も手がけた。高さ333メートルという数字は、関東一円に電波を届けるのに必要な高さなどから決まったとされ、語呂合わせで決めたわけではないと説明される。建設には延べ20万人以上が関わり、着工から完成までおよそ1年半だった。塗り替えはおよそ5年に一度で、職人が刷毛で手塗りする。
