Taiheiyo senso, or the Pacific War, is a name for Japan's part in World War II, from 1941 to 1945.

Japan entered war with the United States and Britain in December 1941, after years of fighting in China. The war ended in August 1945. In Japan the 15th of August, when the emperor's broadcast announcing surrender was heard, is the day marked each year; the surrender document was signed on the 2nd of September. What to call the war is itself disputed in Japan.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

For Japan the war did not begin in 1941. Fighting in China had been going on since 1937, and fighting in Manchuria had begun in 1931. What happened in December 1941 was that Japan attacked the United States and the British Empire as well, which turned a regional war into part of a global one. The fighting ended in August 1945.

In Japan the date remembered is the 15th of August, when a recording of the emperor announcing the acceptance of surrender terms was broadcast, and that day is marked each year with a national ceremony. The formal surrender document was signed on the 2nd of September, which is the date used in many other countries.

Even the name is unsettled here: Pacific War is the most common term, Greater East Asia War was the wartime name and is now associated with particular political positions, and Asia-Pacific War is used by historians who want to include the fighting in China.

Taiheiyo sensoJapan in the Second World War

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QWhy does Japan mark the 15th of August rather than the 2nd of September?

ABecause the 15th is when the public heard the emperor's broadcast accepting the surrender terms, which is the moment the war ended in people's experience. The signing on the 2nd of September was a formal procedure aboard a ship.

QWhy are there several names for the war?

ABecause each name implies a different scope, and for some people a different view. Many avoid the wartime name because of its links to wartime policy, while others use it as the official term of the period; the common postwar name centers the Pacific, and the third adds China. Which one a speaker uses can signal a position.
