Showa no hi to midori no hi are Showa Day, the Showa emperor's birthday, and Greenery Day, now May 4th.
April 29th was the Showa emperor's birthday and a holiday during his reign. When he died in 1989 the date was kept but renamed Greenery Day, partly, it is often said, to avoid a gap in the middle of the spring holidays. In 2007 it was renamed again, to Showa Day, and Greenery Day moved to May 4th, which had been a day off anyway.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
Late April and early May in Japan is Golden Week, a run of holidays, and two of them have a complicated history worth knowing. April 29th was the birthday of the Showa emperor, Hirohito, and was a public holiday throughout his long reign.
When he died in 1989 that reason disappeared, but removing a holiday from the middle of the spring run was not an attractive option, so the date was kept and renamed Greenery Day, a name chosen because he was known for his interest in plants and marine biology. Then in 2007 it changed again.
April 29th became Showa Day, framed as a day to reflect on the Showa era, and Greenery Day was moved to May 4th, a date that had already been a day off under the rule that a weekday caught between two holidays becomes one. So the sequence now runs Showa Day, Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day, Children's Day.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QWhy not just abolish the holiday when the emperor died?
AIt sat in the middle of Golden Week, one of the longest runs of holidays in the year, and removing it would have broken up a period that travel, transport and manufacturing schedules are built around. That is the reason usually given for keeping it under a new name.
QIs Showa Day controversial?
AIt has been debated. Supporters describe it as a day to look back on the whole era, including the postwar recovery, while some critics worried it could be read as honoring the wartime emperor. The law's wording is broad.

Background
