奨学金

shogakukinthe word that means scholarship but usually means student loan
現代の暮らし Modern Japan / 学校生活 School Life応用 Advanced
A student discussing education costs and a scholarship repayment plan.

壱In one line一言で言うと

Shogakukin, usually translated as scholarship, is student support that mostly takes the form of a repayable loan.

弐In 30 seconds30秒で説明する

Shogakukin is translated as scholarship, but the largest provider, a public agency, mainly offers loans that graduates repay over fifteen to twenty years, some of them with interest. Around half of university students use one. Grants that do not need repaying exist and were expanded from 2020, but they are means-tested and smaller. Saying you have a scholarship in English therefore misleads listeners about what you actually have.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Shogakukin is one of the most misleading translations in everyday Japanese. The word is rendered as scholarship, and that is how Japanese students say it in English, but the great majority of what the word covers is a loan. The main provider is a public organization, and its two principal programs are an interest-free loan and an interest-bearing loan, both repaid monthly over fifteen to twenty years after graduation.

Roughly half of Japanese university students take one, which means a large share of people start working life with a debt of a few million yen. Genuine grants — money you keep — do exist, and a national program of tuition support and grants for lower-income households was introduced in 2020 and expanded since, but it is means-tested and covers a minority.

The practical point for anyone speaking English about this is to say student loan rather than scholarship, because a listener abroad hears scholarship and assumes an award for merit that is never repaid, which is the opposite of what most Japanese students have.

奨学金しょうがくきんshogakukinthe word that means scholarship but usually means student loan

「奨学金」の多くは返さなければならない借金。英語のscholarshipとはずれている。

壱一言で言うとIn one line

奨学金とは、英語ではscholarshipと訳される学生への支援ですが、その多くは返済の必要な貸付です。

弐30秒で説明するIn 30 seconds

奨学金はscholarshipと訳されますが、最大の実施機関である公的な団体が主に扱うのは、卒業後に十五年から二十年かけて返す貸与で、利息の付くものもあります。大学生のおよそ半数が利用しています。返さなくてよい給付もあり、2020年から広がりましたが、所得の条件があり、額も小さめです。ですから英語でscholarshipと言うと、実際とは違うものが伝わります。

参スピーチ・英作文As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QSo it's a loan, not a scholarship?

AMostly a loan. Both exist under the same word, so it is worth asking which kind. In English, say student loan unless it genuinely does not need repaying.

つまり給付ではなく貸付ですか。多くは貸付です。同じ言葉で両方を指すので、どちらかを尋ねる値打ちがあります。英語では、本当に返済不要でない限りstudent loanと言ってください。

QHow much do people owe?

ACommonly between two and four million yen by graduation, depending on the program and the length of study. Repayment typically runs fifteen to twenty years.

いくらくらい借りているのですか。制度や在学年数にもよりますが、卒業時で200万円から400万円ほどが多いです。返済は十五年から二十年に及びます。

QDoes this affect life decisions?

ASurveys regularly find people citing repayment as a reason for delaying marriage or children, and some employers now offer repayment support as a recruiting benefit.

暮らしに影響しますか。調査では、返済を理由に結婚や出産を先延ばしにしたという声が繰り返し出ています。返済を肩代わりする制度を、採用でうたう待遇として設ける企業も出てきました。

誤解されやすいA common misunderstanding

MYTHA Japanese shogakukin is a scholarship you don't repay.奨学金は返さなくてよいものだ、と思われがちです。

FACTMost are loans repaid over fifteen to twenty years, some with interest. Non-repayable grants exist but are means-tested and cover a minority.多くは十五年から二十年かけて返す貸与で、利息の付くものもあります。返済不要の給付もありますが、所得の条件があり、対象は一部です。

豆知識Background

日本学生支援機構(JASSO)の貸与型奨学金には、無利子の第一種と有利子の第二種がある。同機構の資料では、大学(昼間部)の学生のおよそ半数が何らかの奨学金を利用しているとされる。返還が困難な場合の減額返還・返還期限猶予の制度があり、2017年度から給付型奨学金が始まった。2020年度には高等教育の修学支援新制度が始まり、授業料等減免と給付型奨学金が住民税非課税世帯などを対象に実施されている。
