Nijushi sekki, the twenty-four solar terms, are divisions of the solar year that name Japan's seasonal turning points.
The twenty-four solar terms divide the year by the sun's position, not by the moon. Risshun, the start of spring, falls around February 4th; the solstices and equinoxes are four of the twenty-four. The system came from ancient China and does not match Japan's actual weather well, which is why the start of spring lands in the coldest weeks. It survives in weather reports, greetings, food marketing and haiku.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
Japanese weather forecasts will say, in early February, that today is risshun, the first day of spring, on a day when it is snowing. Foreign visitors find this strange, and it is worth explaining why. The twenty-four solar terms are a calendar of the sun: the year is divided into twenty-four equal steps of the sun's position along the ecliptic, about fifteen days each.
Four of them are the equinoxes and solstices; the other twenty have names like the start of spring, the descent of frost, the greater cold. The system was worked out in ancient China for the climate of the Yellow River basin, so the names run roughly a month ahead of Japanese weather. Rather than fix that, Japan kept it as a way of announcing a season slightly before it arrives.
In practice the news mentions the term of the day, formal letters open with a phrase built on it, and haiku uses the terms as season words. The dates are not fixed by rule but calculated astronomically, and in Japan the National Astronomical Observatory publishes them for the coming year each February.
二十四節気にじゅうしせっきnijushi sekkithe twenty-four solar terms of the traditional calendar
In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QWhy is the first day of spring in the middle of winter?
AThe names were made for the climate of northern China and mark the point where the days have begun lengthening, not where the air has warmed. Japan kept the names and simply treats them as an announcement in advance.
QIs this the lunar calendar?
ANo. The old Japanese calendar was lunisolar, and the solar terms are the solar half of it — they were added precisely because the moon alone drifts against the farming year.
QDo people actually use them?
APassively, yes. Few can name all twenty-four, but everyone knows risshun, the solstices and the equinoxes, and the terms appear daily in weather reports and seasonal advertising.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHThe dates of the solar terms are fixed on the calendar.
FACTThey are computed from the sun's position each year and can shift by a day. In Japan the National Astronomical Observatory publishes the coming year's dates.

Background
