Adding cold water would weaken it, so the traditional solution was to stir it with long wooden boards until it cooled — a practice called yumomi, now performed with singing for visitors. Kusatsu is a good hot spring to explain because its most famous custom exists to solve a practical problem. The water here is strongly acidic, around pH 2, acidic enough that it is said to kill most bacteria, and it emerges very hot and in one of the largest natural volumes in Japan.
You cannot simply add cold water, because that dilutes the minerals people came for. So the old solution was to cool it mechanically: long wooden boards worked through the water by a row of people until the temperature drops. That is yumomi, and because it is repetitive work, it was done to a song.
It is now performed several times a day as a show, and visitors can try it. In the middle of town is the yubatake, literally the hot water field, a set of open wooden channels where the spring water runs and cools, throwing up steam and depositing yellow mineral crystals. The acidity is real, so take off silver jewelry before you get in.

草津温泉の自然湧出量は日本有数とされ、湯畑からは毎分4,000リットル前後が湧き出るとされる。泉質は酸性・含硫黄泉で、pHは2前後。湯もみは、かつて熱い湯にそのまま入るための下準備として行われ、「草津節」に合わせて行われてきた。江戸時代の温泉番付では、しばしば東の最高位に挙げられている。
