Kerorin oke is the yellow plastic bucket in Japanese public baths, printed with a medicine ad.

Kerorin oke is the yellow plastic bucket you see in many sento, or public baths. You use it to pour hot water over yourself before getting into the bath. The word Kerorin on the bottom is the name of a painkiller, so the bucket is actually an ad. It first appeared in 1963 and became a symbol of the old-style Japanese bathhouse.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

If you go to a sento, or public bath, in Japan, you will probably see stacks of yellow plastic buckets with the word Kerorin printed on the bottom. People call them Kerorin oke. Kerorin is the name of a painkiller that was first sold in 1925, and the bucket started in 1963 as a way to advertise it. The idea was clever.

Everyone in a bathhouse uses a bucket to pour hot water over themselves, so the ad is seen again and again. At the time, bathhouses were switching from wooden buckets to plastic ones, so the timing was perfect. The first buckets were white, but they showed dirt too easily, so the company soon changed them to yellow.

They are famously tough, and there are two sizes, a larger one for eastern Japan and a smaller one for western Japan. Today you can even buy one as a souvenir. To me, the sound of a Kerorin oke hitting the tile floor is the sound of a Japanese bathhouse.

ケロリン桶けろりんおけkerorin okethe yellow plastic bath bucket with an ad on it, found in public baths

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QWhy is there an ad on a bath bucket?

ABecause everyone uses one, again and again. In 1963, the name of a painkiller started appearing on bathhouse buckets, and the bathhouses got sturdy plastic buckets. It worked so well that the yellow bucket became famous on its own.

QWhy are there two sizes?

AIt's said that in western Japan, people often scoop water straight from the bath, so a smaller bucket is easier to lift. In eastern Japan, people usually fill it from the tap, so it can be bigger.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHThe word on the bottom is the name of the bathhouse.

FACTIt's the name of a painkiller. The bucket is an advertisement, and you'll find the same one at bathhouses all over Japan.

Background
