Karate is a striking martial art that developed in Okinawa and spread to mainland Japan in the twentieth century.

Karate uses punches, kicks, knee and elbow strikes and open-hand techniques. It developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom, now Okinawa, drawing on Chinese martial arts, and was introduced to mainland Japan in the 1920s. Training centers on kata, set sequences of movements practiced alone. It became an Olympic sport at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Karate is often assumed to be from mainland Japan, but it developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom, which is now Okinawa, a separate kingdom with its own language and its own trade links to China. Chinese martial arts came in through those links and combined with local fighting traditions.

The name was originally written with characters meaning Chinese hand, and was changed in the twentieth century to characters meaning empty hand; the shared sound and the mood of the times are usually given as reasons.

Karate reached mainland Japan in the 1920s, largely through Gichin Funakoshi, and from there went worldwide, helped considerably by American servicemen stationed in Okinawa after the war. Training is built around kata, fixed sequences performed alone, which preserve techniques in a form that can be practiced without a partner. It became an Olympic sport for the first time at the Tokyo Games.

空手からてkaratethe striking martial art from Okinawa

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QWhat does the name mean?

AToday it is written with characters meaning empty hand, referring to fighting without weapons. It was formerly written as Chinese hand, and the change is documented in the early twentieth century.

QWhy are there so many different styles?

AKarate was taught privately in small groups in Okinawa before it was systematized, so different teachers preserved different emphases. Shotokan, Goju-ryu, Shito-ryu and Wado-ryu are the four major styles, and most competition kata come from them.

QIs breaking boards real?

ATameshiwari is a genuine practice for testing focus and technique, but it is a demonstration, not the core of training. Most karate practice is kata and controlled sparring.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHKarate is an ancient samurai art from mainland Japan.

Background
