Kaki, or Japanese persimmon, is a sweet orange fruit that many people see as a taste of autumn.

Kaki is the Japanese word for persimmon, an orange fruit that ripens in autumn. There are two main types. Sweet kinds can be eaten fresh, like an apple, while astringent kinds make your mouth feel dry until they are dried or treated. Persimmon trees grow in many gardens and villages, so for many people the fruit is a familiar sign of autumn.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Kaki, or persimmon, is one of the fruits Japanese people connect most strongly with autumn. In October and November, you can see orange fruit hanging from branches in gardens and villages, and the shops are full of them. There are two main kinds. Sweet persimmons can be peeled and eaten fresh, a little like an apple.

Astringent persimmons are different. If you bite into one while it is still firm, it makes your mouth feel dry and rough. But people found a way to use them. They peel them, hang them under the eaves, and let the cold autumn air dry them for several weeks.

The result is hoshigaki, or dried persimmon, which is very sweet. Persimmons also appear in culture. One of the best-known haiku in Japan, by Masaoka Shiki, is about eating a persimmon and hearing the bell of Horyuji Temple in Nara. For me, a persimmon on the table is a quiet sign that winter is coming.

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QIs kaki the same fruit as the persimmon we have back home?

AIt's the same kind of fruit. The persimmons sold in many countries are this Asian species, and some languages even call it kaki or something close to it. North America also has its own native persimmon, which is smaller.

QHow do you know if a persimmon is the sweet kind?

AIn a Japanese shop, the persimmons sold for eating fresh are almost always ready to eat. Astringent kinds are usually sold after the astringency has been removed, or dried as hoshigaki. If someone gives you one from their own tree, ask first whether it is the sweet kind.

QWhich part of Japan grows the most persimmons?

AAccording to government statistics for the 2024 harvest, Wakayama was first and Nara was second. Persimmons are grown in many other prefectures as well, and each area has its favorite varieties.

A common misunderstanding
