Jidai Matsuri is a Kyoto festival where about 2,000 people parade in costumes from different periods of history.

Jidai Matsuri, or the Festival of the Ages, takes place in Kyoto every October 22nd. About 2,000 people dressed as historical figures and ordinary people from different eras walk from the old Imperial Palace to Heian Jingu Shrine. The festival started in 1895, when the shrine was built to mark 1,100 years since Kyoto became the capital.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Kyoto has three famous festivals: Aoi Matsuri in May, Gion Matsuri in July, and Jidai Matsuri in October. Jidai Matsuri is the newest of the three. It started in 1895, when Heian Jingu Shrine was built to celebrate 1,100 years since the capital moved to Kyoto in 794.

It's held every October 22nd, the day the emperor is said to have entered the new capital. The main event is a parade of about 2,000 people that stretches for about two kilometers. They wear costumes from different periods, and the parade goes backward in time, from the Meiji era to the 700s.

You can see samurai in armor, women in elegant court robes, and famous figures from Japanese history. Most of the people in the parade are local residents, not professional actors. What I like about it is that it's a history lesson you can watch from the sidewalk. If you go, find a spot early, because the streets get crowded.

Jidai MatsuriKyoto's Festival of the Ages, a costume parade through Japanese history

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QIs this one of Kyoto's oldest festivals?

ANo, it's actually the newest of Kyoto's three big festivals. Aoi Matsuri and Gion Matsuri are said to go back more than a thousand years, while Jidai Matsuri started in 1895.

QIs it a religious event or just a parade?

AOfficially, it's a festival of Heian Jingu Shrine, and the shrine's sacred carriages travel with the procession. But for most people watching, it's mainly a chance to see costumes from Japanese history.

Background
