inkan-shomeithe certificate proving your registered seal is genuine
Advanced
A resident receiving proof of registered seal at a municipal counter.

Inkan shomei is the certificate proving a registered personal seal genuinely belongs to you, required for major transactions.

Anyone fifteen or older can register one personal seal, called a jitsuin, with their local municipal office, and only that registered seal can be officially certified. The certificate, inkan shomei, is what proves the seal stamped on a document is genuinely yours, and it's required for buying a car, taking out a loan, or transferring real estate. A rubber stamp cannot be registered, and one seal cannot be registered by two people. A cheap store-bought stamp is often accepted, but it is not recommended, since identical copies are sold everywhere.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Inkan shomei sits one step beyond an ordinary hanko. Most everyday stamping, signing for a delivery or a form at the office, uses an unregistered stamp that anyone could theoretically buy off a shelf. For anything with real financial weight, buying a car, taking out a loan, or transferring a house, the law expects a jitsuin instead: a single personal seal registered with your city or ward office.

A cheap mass-produced stamp may be accepted, but most people have one carved specially, since identical copies of a stock stamp are easy to buy. Once registered, you can request a certificate, the inkan shomei, that proves the impression on a document was made by your registered seal and therefore represents your genuine consent.

Losing that seal is treated seriously, closer to losing a passport than losing a pen, and reporting it immediately cancels the registration so nobody else can use it in your name. Since 2020, the government has pushed hard to eliminate stamping for routine paperwork across ministries, but jitsuin and inkan shomei have survived that push for exactly the transactions where proof of identity carries the most legal weight.

印鑑証明いんかんしょうめいinkan-shomeithe certificate proving your registered seal is genuine

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QDo I need a special stamp to register as my jitsuin?

ANot necessarily. Rubber stamps and seals that can deform are refused, and the rules vary by municipality, but a cheap mass-produced stamp is often accepted. Because identical copies are sold everywhere, most people order one made specifically for this purpose.

QWhat happens if I lose my registered seal?

AReport it to your municipal office immediately to cancel the registration, since anyone who found it could otherwise stamp documents that appear to carry your legal consent.

QDo foreign residents need one?

AIf you're registered as a resident and need to buy property, a car, or sign a major loan, yes, the same registration system applies to foreign and Japanese residents alike.

Background
