Hitotsume kozo is a Japanese yokai that looks like a small boy with one big eye.

Hitotsume kozo is a yokai, or Japanese folk monster, shaped like a little boy with a single eye in the middle of his face. He is often drawn with a shaved head like a young monk. He usually just pops up and surprises people rather than hurting them. In some parts of eastern Japan, people hung bamboo baskets outside on certain winter days to scare him away.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Hitotsume kozo, which means "one-eyed boy," is one of the best-known yokai, or folk monsters, in Japan. He looks like a small child, often with a shaved head like a young Buddhist monk, but he has only one big eye in the middle of his face. In most stories, he doesn't attack anyone.

He just appears on a dark road, sometimes sticking out a long tongue, and gives people a fright. What I find interesting is how people dealt with him. In parts of the Kanto region, around Tokyo, it was said that one-eyed monsters came around on February 8th and December 8th.

On those days, some families hung a woven bamboo basket on a long pole outside the house. The basket has lots of holes, which look like many eyes, and the idea was that a creature with only one eye would be scared off by them. The folklorist Yanagita Kunio even suggested that he may once have been a god who lost his status over time.

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QIs hitotsume kozo dangerous?

ANot really. In most stories, he just appears suddenly and scares people. He's closer to a prankster than a killer.

QWhy would a basket scare him away?

AA woven bamboo basket is full of holes, and people saw them as many eyes. The idea was that a monster with only one eye would be overwhelmed and run away.

QIs it the same as the Cyclops in Greek myths?

AThey both have one eye, but they're very different. The Cyclops is a huge, violent giant, while hitotsume kozo is a small boy who mostly just startles people.

Background
