Gemu boi, or Game Boy, is Nintendo's handheld game console, first sold in Japan in 1989.

The Game Boy is a handheld game console that Nintendo released in Japan on April 21st, 1989. It had a small green-and-black screen and ran on AA batteries, and you could swap game cartridges. Games like Tetris and later Pokemon made it a huge hit around the world. A color version, the Game Boy Color, followed in 1998.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

If you ask Japanese people in their thirties or forties about their childhood, many will mention the Game Boy. Nintendo released it in Japan in April 1989. Compared with other handheld consoles that came later, it was simple: the screen showed only shades of green and black, and it ran on four AA batteries.

But that simplicity was its strength. It was cheap, tough, and the batteries lasted a long time, so kids could play on trains, in the car, or at a friend's house. You could also connect two Game Boys with a cable.

That feature became famous in 1996, when the first Pokemon games came out and children started trading monsters with their friends. In 1998 Nintendo added color with the Game Boy Color. I think the Game Boy shows something typical of Japanese design: it didn't win by having the best technology, but by being easy to carry and fun to share.

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QWhy was the screen green instead of color?

AA simple screen kept the price down and made the batteries last much longer. Color handhelds of that time were more expensive and used up batteries quickly.

QWhat does the Game Boy have to do with Pokemon?

AThe first Pokemon games came out for the Game Boy in Japan in 1996. Players linked two Game Boys with a cable to trade and battle, and that social part helped Pokemon become a worldwide hit.

Background
