Asa dokusho is a short silent reading time that many schools hold every morning.

Asa dokusho means "morning reading." In many Japanese schools, students and teachers spend about ten minutes reading quietly before the first class. Students choose their own books, and there are no tests or book reports. The idea is simply to help children enjoy reading and to start the day calmly.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

In many Japanese schools, the day begins with asa dokusho, or morning reading. Before the first class, everyone in the room, including the teacher, reads a book quietly, often for about ten minutes. The movement is said to have started in 1988, when two teachers at a private high school in Chiba Prefecture tried it with their students.

It then spread to schools across the country, from elementary schools to high schools. It has four simple rules: everyone does it, it happens every day, students can read any book they like, and they just read. There are no quizzes and no reports to write afterward. Supporters say that the classroom becomes calmer and students are more ready to learn.

Of course, not every student loves it, and it is not a national rule, so some schools use the morning for other activities. Still, some people say it was where they first finished a whole novel on their own. At my school, I used those ten minutes to read mystery novels.

As a short speech
