Mika joined the school band in April. She wanted to play the trumpet, but there were already five trumpet players. The teacher gave her a big drum instead. At first, Mika was not happy. The drum was heavy, and Mika felt that nobody noticed her part.
One day in July, the band practiced without the drum because Mika was sick. The music sounded strange. Everyone was playing at a different speed. "We need Mika," said Ken, the leader.
The next day, Mika came back. Ken told her, "We need you, Mika." She played the drum louder and more carefully than before. In the October concert, the band won second prize. After the concert, Mika smiled and said, "Maybe I don't need the trumpet."
