A Shared Language and the Survival of Local Ones
早見表
1It is often said that the spread of a single international language is a threat to the world's linguistic diversity. According to this view, as more people learn the dominant language for school, business, and science, smaller languages lose speakers and eventually disappear. The concern is understandable, and it deserves to be taken seriously, because when a language disappears, a unique store of knowledge, stories, and ways of describing nature disappears with it.
2Yet this argument rests on an assumption that is not always justified: that a common language and local languages are rivals, so that gaining one means losing the other. History suggests a more complicated picture. A shared language has made it possible for people from very different backgrounds to cooperate, to exchange ideas, and to challenge those in power. Scientists in distant countries can check each other's work, and citizens can compare their experiences without an interpreter. To reject such benefits in the name of preserving diversity would be to ask some communities to stay isolated for the sake of others' curiosity.
3A more useful question is under what conditions a language survives. Languages rarely die because people dislike them. They fade when the home, the school, and the workplace stop offering reasons to use them, and when younger speakers come to associate them with poverty or backwardness. In other words, the decisive factor is not the existence of a dominant language but the status given to the others. Where a community's language is used in education, publishing, and public life, its speakers tend to feel proud of it and pass it on. Communities that see their language as useful only at home, and never at school or in public, are sending their children a quiet message about its future.
4Some might object that such support is costly and that limited public resources should be spent on more urgent matters. This objection has some force. Nevertheless, the cost of doing nothing is also real, though it is harder to measure, since lost languages cannot be recovered once the last fluent speakers are gone. Public support might include teaching materials, broadcasting, and training for teachers, all of which are modest in comparison with the cultural loss at stake.
5Therefore, we should stop treating the choice as either a global language or local ones. The realistic goal is multilingualism, in which people use a shared language to reach the wider world while keeping their own languages alive as part of their identity. A world in which this is possible would be neither uniform nor divided, but connected and varied at the same time.

4 Model summary
Although a global language is said to threaten linguistic diversity, it need not rival local languages, because it allows people from different backgrounds to cooperate. What matters for survival is the status that other languages receive in education and public life. Support costs money, but lost languages cannot be recovered, so the goal should be multilingualism: a shared language for the wider world, and one's own for identity.
