The Trouble with Authenticity
早見表
1Tourists often search for what they call the authentic culture of a place: the old festival, the traditional craft, the costume unchanged for generations. The wish is understandable, since nobody travels far to see a copy of home. Behind this search lies an admirable respect for heritage. Yet the desire for authenticity contains an assumption that deserves examination, namely that a culture is truly itself only when it stays the same.
2In reality, traditions have never been fixed. Every practice that we now call traditional was once new, adopted by people who found it useful or beautiful, and modified by later generations to suit changing circumstances. Contact with other societies, through trade and migration, has always supplied fresh materials and ideas. A culture is therefore better understood as an ongoing conversation between past and present than as an object to be preserved in its original condition. Even the costumes and dishes now presented as ancient often show traces of borrowed materials and styles, and their makers were not embarrassed by this.
3This understanding has important consequences when tourism is involved. If visitors expect performers to appear exactly as they did in some imagined past, communities may feel pressure to present a simplified, frozen version of themselves. The festival becomes a show for outsiders, and the people who live in the culture are reduced to actors in their own home. Visitors, for their part, may leave with the impression that they have seen the real place, when what they have actually seen is a performance designed to match their expectations. Such a process may bring income, but it can also empty a tradition of its meaning, because it separates practice from the life that gave it purpose.
4It would be too simple, however, to declare that all change is healthy. Rapid change driven by outside economic forces can destroy skills and knowledge before a community has had a chance to decide what it wants to keep. Preservation efforts, such as recording songs or teaching young people a craft, can therefore play a valuable role, provided that they respond to the community's own wishes rather than to those of outsiders.
5The question of authenticity should thus be asked differently. Rather than asking whether a practice is unchanged, we should ask who has the power to decide how it develops. A culture is authentic when its members are free to keep, adapt, or abandon their traditions on their own terms, and visitors who understand this will be better guests. This shift moves attention from the object to the people, from the museum to the living community.

4 Model summary
Tourists seek an unchanged culture, but traditions have always changed through contact, forming a conversation between past and present. Frozen to meet visitors' expectations, they lose their meaning. Preservation that follows the community's own wishes can help against sudden loss, yet authenticity should be judged not by whether a practice is unchanged but by who has the power to decide how a culture develops.
