1When people fail to keep a resolution, such as studying every evening or eating less sugar, they usually blame a lack of willpower. The assumption is that successful people simply have stronger minds. I would like to suggest that this explanation is misleading and even harmful.

2Consider how the mind works during an ordinary day. Much of our behavior is triggered automatically by cues in the environment rather than by conscious decisions. A phone lying on the desk invites a glance; a snack in plain view invites a bite. To resist such cues repeatedly requires effort, and effort is limited, so even determined people eventually give in.

3This suggests a different strategy. Instead of relying on strength of character, we can change the surroundings that shape our actions. Someone who wants to concentrate can leave the phone in another room. Someone who wants to eat better can keep healthy food where it is easy to reach. By making the desired action easy and the unwanted action inconvenient, we let the environment do the work.

4Some readers may object that this approach avoids the real issue. Character, they say, is built by facing temptation, not by hiding from it, and a person who can only behave well in a carefully controlled setting is not truly disciplined. There is something in this view, since inner strength does matter in situations we cannot control.

5Even so, relying on willpower alone is like trying to swim against a strong current. It is wiser to arrange conditions in advance so that good behavior requires little struggle, keeping our limited strength for moments when it is truly needed.

6The lesson is encouraging. Change does not depend on being a special kind of person; it depends on designing a better setting.

1-c 2-a 3-d 4-b 5-f 6-e

  1. resolution 決意
  2. misleading
  4. temptation
  5. disciplined
  6. current

4 Model summary

Failing to keep resolutions is not proof of weak willpower. Behavior is triggered by environmental cues, and willpower is limited. Although some value building character, it is wiser to arrange surroundings so that good actions are easy. Change depends on design, not on special people.

Some readers may object
