Is Nature Only a Competition?
早見表
1When people imagine nature, they often picture a fierce competition in which every creature fights for its own survival. The phrase “survival of the fittest” is often understood in this way. According to this picture, only the strongest and the fastest can succeed, and kindness has no place in the wild.
2However, careful observation of living things suggests a more complicated story. Many plants and animals depend on partners of a different kind. Flowers offer sweet liquid to insects, and in return the insects carry pollen from one plant to another. Small fish clean the skin of larger fish, gaining a meal while removing harmful pests. In such relationships, both sides gain something they could not easily get alone. Such partnerships are found in forests, oceans, and even in the soil under our feet.
3Cooperation exists even within a single species. Some animals live in groups where members warn each other of danger or take care of young that are not their own. Such behavior can help the group survive, and a group that survives can pass on the habits that made it strong. Therefore, what is “fit” is often not the most powerful individual but the one that fits well with others.
4It would be a mistake, though, to say that nature is simply friendly. Competition for food and space is real, and cooperation sometimes breaks down when one partner takes more than it gives, and a partner that gives too little is sometimes driven away. Both forces are at work, and their balance changes with the situation.
5In short, nature is neither purely a battlefield nor a peaceful garden. Recognizing the importance of cooperation helps us understand living things more accurately, and it may also change how we think about our own societies.

4 Model summary
Nature is often seen as a competition where only the strongest survive. In fact, cooperation occurs between species and within groups, and the fittest are often those who fit well with others. However, competition is also real, so nature involves both competition and cooperation at once.
