A yutanpo is a hot water bottle. You fill it with hot water, put it in a cloth cover, and place it in your futon or bed before you go to sleep. Japanese yutanpo come in metal, plastic and soft rubber, and some newer types are heated in a microwave. Many people like them because they stay warm for hours without electricity.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
A yutanpo is a hot water bottle, and in winter, it's one of the simplest ways people in Japan keep warm at night. Many Japanese homes are not heated in every room, so bedrooms can get very cold. Before going to bed, you fill the yutanpo with hot water, wrap it in a cover, and put it in your futon.
By the time you get in, the bed is warm. The name has an interesting history. It's said to come from a Chinese word that means something like a hot water wife, because it kept a person warm in bed. Japanese people later added yu, the word for hot water, to the front.
There's one thing to be careful about. Even if it only feels warm, keeping it against the same spot of skin for hours can cause a low-temperature burn. Most people use it to warm up the bed and then push it away from their body. I like how it needs no electricity at all.

壱一言で言うとIn one line
湯たんぽとは、お湯を入れて、寒い夜に布団を温めるための入れ物のことです。
弐30秒で説明するIn 30 seconds
湯たんぽは、お湯を入れて使う暖房具です。お湯を入れて布のカバーに包み、寝る前に布団やベッドに入れておきます。日本の湯たんぽには金属、プラスチック、やわらかいゴムのものがあり、電子レンジで温める新しい種類もあります。電気を使わずに何時間も温かいので、好んで使う人が多くいます。
参スピーチ・英作文As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QIs it safe to sleep with it?
ABe careful. Even if it only feels warm, touching the same spot of skin for hours can cause a low-temperature burn. Use it to warm the bed, then move it away from your body or take it out before you fall asleep.
湯たんぽを入れたまま寝ても大丈夫ですか。気をつけてください。温かいと感じる程度でも、何時間も同じところの肌に触れていると低温やけどになることがあります。布団を温めたら体から離すか、眠る前に出してください。
QWhy not just use an electric blanket?
AMany people do. But a yutanpo needs no electricity, you can use it anywhere, and the heat slowly fades through the night, which some people find more comfortable.
なぜ電気毛布を使わないのですか。電気毛布を使う人もたくさんいます。でも湯たんぽは電気がいらず、どこでも使えますし、夜の間にゆっくりと冷めていくので、そのほうが心地よいと感じる人もいます。
QWhy is it called yutanpo?
AThe usual explanation is that tanpo comes from a Chinese word for a hot water bottle, which used a character meaning wife or old woman. Japanese people later added yu, meaning hot water, so the name actually says hot water twice.
なぜ「湯たんぽ」という名前なのですか。よく言われる説明では、「たんぽ」は湯たんぽを表す中国の言葉から来ていて、その字には「妻」や「老女」という意味の字が使われていました。のちに日本で「湯」が付けられたので、実はお湯という意味が二回入っている名前なのです。

豆知識Background
