Yosegaki is a card or board that a whole group writes messages on for one person.
Yosegaki means "gathered writing." When someone graduates, changes schools or leaves a job, everyone in the group writes a short message on one square board called shikishi. The messages go in all directions around the center, often with doodles. It's a simple gift, but many people keep theirs for years.

If you go to school or work in Japan, sooner or later someone will hand you a thick square board and a marker and ask you to write something. That's yosegaki, a group message for one person. It's most common at graduation, when a classmate moves away, or when a coworker retires or transfers.
The board is called shikishi, and it's the same kind of board that celebrities use for autographs. Usually the person's name goes in the middle, and everyone writes around it, so the messages point in every direction. People add small drawings, inside jokes and lines like "Thank you for everything" or "Good luck at your new school."
Sports teams sometimes do the same thing on a flag or a ball. These days, some groups make online versions with photos, but the paper board is still popular. What I like about yosegaki is that it's cheap and simple, yet people often keep it for decades because every message is in someone's own handwriting.
寄せ書きよせがきyosegakia group message card that many people sign for one person
In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QWhat should I write if I don't know the person very well?
AKeep it short and kind. Something like "Thank you for your help" or "Good luck in your new job" is perfectly fine. Nobody expects a long letter.
QWhy do the messages go in different directions?
ABecause people write around the name in the middle, and each person turns the board to find an empty space. Some groups start with the messages all facing the same way, but many end up going in a circle.

Background
