Waraji are straw sandals that people once tied to their feet for walking long distances.
Waraji are sandals woven from rice straw and tied firmly around the foot and ankle with long cords. Before modern shoes, travelers, farmers and pilgrims wore them for long walks, and a pair could wear out in a few days. Today you mostly see them at festivals and on some pilgrimages. The giant pair on Sensoji's Hozomon gate in Asakusa is a famous example.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
Waraji are traditional Japanese sandals woven from rice straw. Unlike zori, which you simply slip on, waraji are tied around the foot and ankle with long straw cords, so they stay on while you walk for hours.
For centuries, travelers, farmers and pilgrims wore them, and people often carried spare pairs because one pair could wear out in a few days. A famous example can be seen at Sensoji Temple in Asakusa. On the back of the Hozomon gate hangs a giant straw sandal about four and a half meters long.
The first was offered in 1941, and since 1964 people in Murayama City in Yamagata have made and offered a new one about every ten years. Waraji also live on in the language. Someone with two jobs is said to wear two pairs of waraji. I like that an old sandal still appears in everyday Japanese.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
