Products built on it come with a character and a voice, and the best known is Hatsune Miku, released in 2007. Thousands of amateurs used her to publish songs online, so the character became famous through fans rather than through a record company.

The software itself is just a tool, but what made it a cultural event was Hatsune Miku, a Vocaloid product released in 2007 with a voice built from recordings of an actress and a turquoise-haired character on the box.
Amateur musicians bought it, wrote songs, uploaded them to video sites, and other people drew art and made videos for those songs. Nobody was in charge.
Within a few years there were hundreds of thousands of songs, concerts with the character projected on stage, and a fan base outside Japan. To me the interesting part is not the technology but the ownership: a company sold a voice, and the public decided who the singer was.

QWho writes the songs?
AAnyone. That is the point. Most Vocaloid songs are written by individuals who upload them for free, and a number of those people later became professional composers. Several songs that started this way are now standards that school choirs sing.
曲は誰が作っているのですか。誰でもです。そこが肝心です。ボーカロイドの曲の多くは個人が無料で公開したもので、そこからプロの作曲家になった人も少なくありません。こうして生まれた曲のいくつかは、今では学校の合唱でも歌われる定番になっています。
QWhy does the voice sound artificial on purpose?
AEarly software simply could not sound human, and listeners came to like the sound rather than treat it as a flaw. Even now that the technology is much better, many producers keep the machine quality because it is part of the style.
どうして声をわざと機械的にしているのですか。初期のソフトは人間らしく歌えなかったのですが、聴き手はそれを欠点ではなく個性として好きになりました。技術がずっと良くなった今も、多くの作り手はあえて機械的な質感を残します。それが様式の一部だからです。

豆知識Background
「初音ミク」の名は、初めての音と未来の音を重ねたものとされます。発売元のクリプトン・フューチャー・メディアがキャラクターの二次創作を広く認める指針を出したことが、作品が爆発的に増えた大きな理由です。ボーカロイドを使って曲を発表する人は「ボカロP」と呼ばれ、そこから商業音楽の第一線に出た作り手も生まれました。技術としてのボーカロイドはヤマハの製品名であり、同種の歌声合成ソフトは他社からも出ています。
