uchiwaa flat, round hand fan that doesn't fold
Standard

Uchiwa is a flat, round Japanese hand fan that doesn't fold, used mostly in summer.

Uchiwa is a flat, round fan made of paper or plastic stretched over a frame, traditionally of bamboo. Unlike a sensu, or folding fan, it doesn't fold. People carry uchiwa to summer festivals and fireworks shows, use them to cool rice when making sushi, and wave them at concerts. Stores and companies often hand out uchiwa printed with ads for free in summer.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Uchiwa is a flat, round hand fan, and in Japan it is one of the clearest signs that summer has arrived. Many traditional uchiwa have a frame made by splitting one piece of bamboo into many thin ribs, with paper glued over both sides. Unlike a sensu, the folding fan, an uchiwa doesn't fold, so it's less elegant but moves more air.

People tuck one into the belt of their yukata at summer festivals, and in the kitchen it is used to cool vinegared rice quickly when making sushi. On busy streets in summer, you may be handed a plastic uchiwa with an ad printed on it, which is a free giveaway.

Fans at idol concerts also hold up uchiwa decorated with their favorite member's name. Most uchiwa made in Japan come from Marugame in Kagawa Prefecture, where the craft is said to have started as a souvenir for pilgrims in the Edo period. I like that something so simple can be a craft, a cooking tool and a fan sign all at once.

団扇うちわuchiwaa flat, round hand fan that doesn't fold

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QWhat's the difference between an uchiwa and a sensu?

AA sensu folds up, so it's easy to carry in a bag and is also used in dance and ceremonies. An uchiwa stays flat. It's more casual, but it's cheaper and moves more air.

QWhy do people hold uchiwa at concerts?

AFans decorate them with a performer's name or a short message, so the performer can see who they're cheering for. Some concerts limit the size, so fans check the rules first.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHUchiwa and sensu are just two names for the same fan.

FACTThey're different tools. A sensu folds into a thin stick, while an uchiwa is a flat fan with a fixed frame and handle.

Phrases you can use

Background
