Tokoya is the everyday word for a barbershop, where you can get a haircut and a face shave.

Tokoya is the everyday word for a barbershop. In Japan, barbers and beauty salons are covered by different laws and need different licenses. Barbers can shave your face with a razor, and a cut often comes with a shampoo, a shave and sometimes a quick shoulder massage. Many men now go to beauty salons instead, and there are also cheap, quick haircut shops.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

In Japan, there are two kinds of places to get your hair cut, and they are more different than you might think. A tokoya, or barbershop, is run by barbers, and a biyoin, or beauty salon, is run by beauticians. They are covered by different laws, and each needs its own license.

Barbers are allowed to shave your face with a razor, so a typical visit to a tokoya includes a cut, a shampoo, a face shave and sometimes a short shoulder massage at the end. Beauty salons focus on perms, coloring, styling and makeup, and they generally can't do a full face shave.

Traditionally, men went to the tokoya and women went to the biyoin, but that line has blurred, and today many men go to beauty salons. As of March 2024, there were about 110,000 barbershops and about 274,000 beauty salons in Japan, and the number of barbershops is going down. Personally, I think a face shave at an old neighborhood tokoya is a small luxury worth trying.

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QCan I just ask for a quick trim?

AOf course. Showing a photo on your phone is the easiest way to explain what you want. If you don't want a shave or a shampoo, you can say so at the start.

QWhat do the red, white and blue poles mean?

AThat's the barber pole, the same sign used in many other countries. In Japan, it usually marks a barbershop rather than a beauty salon. Where the colors came from isn't certain, and there are several theories.

QDo I need to tip the barber?

ANo. Tipping isn't part of the custom in Japan, and the price on the menu is what you pay. A simple "thank you" is enough.

Phrases you can use

  • Just a little off the top, please.
  • Could you make it look like this photo?
  • Barbers here can shave your face, but beauty salons usually can't.
  • A cut usually comes with a shampoo and a shave.
  • You don't need to tip.

Background
