sumo beyathe stable where wrestlers live
Standard

A sumo beya is the stable where wrestlers live, train and eat together under one master.

A sumo beya is both a training gym and a household. Wrestlers below the top divisions live in it, sleep in shared rooms, cook and clean for the senior wrestlers, and train every morning. It is run by a retired wrestler called an oyakata, and wrestlers from the same stable do not normally face each other in tournaments.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

A sumo beya, usually translated as stable, is where professional sumo actually happens. It is not a gym you attend but a house you live in. Wrestlers below the salaried divisions sleep in a shared room, get up before dawn to train, and spend the rest of the day doing the work of the household: cooking the communal stew, cleaning, laundry, and attending to the senior wrestlers, who eat first and bathe first.

Everything is ordered by rank. The stable is headed by an oyakata, a retired wrestler who holds one of a limited number of elder shares, and he is responsible for the wrestlers in a way closer to a guardian than a coach.

Wrestlers from the same stable normally do not fight each other in a tournament, which is why bout schedules are arranged across stables. Morning practice can sometimes be watched by visitors, but only by arrangement and under strict rules of silence.

相撲部屋すもうべやsumo beyathe stable where wrestlers live

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QCan I watch morning practice?

ASometimes, but not by turning up. Arrangements are usually made through a hotel, a guide or a tour, numbers are limited, and the rules are strict: sit on the floor, stay silent, no flash, no phone calls, no leaving mid-session.

QWhat do they eat?

AThe stable dish is chanko, a large hot pot of meat, fish, tofu and vegetables in broth, eaten in enormous quantities after morning practice with rice. It is not fattening in itself; the weight comes from the volume and from sleeping after eating.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHSumo wrestlers train at a gym and go home.

FACTWrestlers in the lower divisions live in the stable full time, with duties, a curfew and a strict order of seniority. Only the higher ranks may live outside.

Phrases you can use

  • The wrestlers live here, not just train here.
  • Everything is ordered by rank.
  • Same-stable wrestlers don't fight each other.
  • Practice starts before dawn.

Background
