A typical ryokan plan is one night with two meals: a big dinner in the evening and breakfast the next morning.
The price is per person, so two guests pay about twice as much. That's a wonderful way to experience Japanese food, but it doesn't suit everyone. Some travelers arrive late, some want to try local restaurants, and some just want to save money. For them, sudomari is the answer.

AUsually, because you're not paying for dinner and breakfast. But the room itself isn't discounted much, and you'll spend money on food outside. In a small hot spring village, there may be very few restaurants open at night, so plan ahead.
素泊まりは、いつも安いのですか。たいていは安くなります。夕食と朝食の分を払わないからです。ただ、部屋そのものはあまり安くならず、外で食べる分のお金もかかります。小さな温泉の村だと、夜に開いている店がほとんど無いこともあるので、前もって考えておいてください。

豆知識Background
「素泊まり」の「素」は、「素顔」「素手」と同じく「何も付け加えない」という意味で、食事を付けない泊まり方を表します。旅館は1人あたりの「1泊2食付き」で値段を示すことが多く、素泊まりや朝食だけのプランは、その基本から食事を外したものです。一方、海外のホテルはふつう1部屋いくらで値段が決まり、食事は別に払います。外国の人が旅館の値段を見て驚くのは、多くの場合、この違いです。なお、2018年6月の旅館業法の改正で「ホテル営業」と「旅館営業」は「旅館・ホテル営業」にまとめられ、法律の上では旅館とホテルの区別はなくなっています。
