Shigarakiyaki no tanuki are ceramic raccoon dog statues from Shigaraki, set outside shops for good luck.

In front of many Japanese restaurants and shops, you'll find a smiling ceramic raccoon dog wearing a straw hat and carrying a sake bottle. These statues come from Shigaraki in Shiga Prefecture, one of Japan's oldest pottery towns. The word tanuki sounds like ta o nuku, meaning "to get ahead of others," so the statue is a charm for good business.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Walk past a soba shop or an old bar in Japan, and you may be greeted by a fat, smiling ceramic animal in a straw hat. This is a tanuki, often translated as a raccoon dog, and many of these statues are made in Shigaraki, a town in Shiga Prefecture with a pottery tradition going back about 800 years.

The real tanuki is a wild animal, but in folklore it's a trickster that can change its shape. The statues became popular in the 1950s, and today they're one of the best-known faces of Shigaraki ware. Shop owners like them for a simple pun: tanuki sounds like ta o nuku, which means "to get ahead of others."

Each part of the classic figure also has a lucky meaning. The hat protects against bad luck, the big belly shows calm and courage, and the sake bottle means you'll never go without food and drink. In the town of Shigaraki, you can see rows of them, big and small, in front of the pottery shops. I find them funny and friendly, and they always make me smile.

Shigarakiyaki no tanukithe ceramic raccoon dog statues from Shigaraki, often placed at shop entrances

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QIs a tanuki a raccoon?

ANo. It's often called a raccoon dog in English, but it's a member of the dog family and not closely related to the raccoon. It lives in the wild in much of Japan, even near cities.

QWhy does it hold a bottle and a little book?

AThe bottle stands for never running short of food and drink. The little book is a shop's account book, and it stands for trust, which is the base of any business.

QAre all ceramic tanuki from Shigaraki?

ANot all of them, but Shigaraki is by far the most famous source. The town is so connected to tanuki that people often just say "Shigaraki tanuki."

Background
