Sanmon is the main gate of a Buddhist temple, marking the line between the street and sacred ground.
Sanmon is the main gate at the front of a Buddhist temple. The name means "mountain gate," because most Japanese temples have a mountain name, or sango, even when they stand in the middle of a city. At Zen temples it is often written with the characters for "three gates," a symbol of three insights on the path to enlightenment. Many visitors stop and bow at the gate before they step inside.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
When you visit a Japanese temple, the first thing you pass through is usually a large gate called the sanmon, or mountain gate. You might wonder why it has that name when the temple is in the middle of a city. The reason is that most Japanese temples have a mountain name, called a sango, as part of their full name.
Sensoji in Asakusa, for example, is formally Kinryuzan Sensoji, which means Golden Dragon Mountain. The custom is said to come from China, where many temples were built in the mountains. At Zen temples, the word is often written with different characters meaning "three gates."
They stand for three kinds of insight that lead to enlightenment. Some gates also hold a pair of fierce guardian statues called Nio, like the famous ones at Todaiji in Nara. I always tell visitors to look up when they walk through, because the gate itself is often a beautiful piece of architecture.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QWhy does a temple in the city have a mountain name?
AIt's a tradition. Many early temples in China were built in the mountains, and the mountain name became part of a temple's formal name. Japanese temples kept the custom, even when they were built on flat land.
QShould I do anything special at the gate?
ANothing is required, but many Japanese people stop for a moment and bow before walking through. Some also avoid stepping on the raised threshold, if the gate has one.
QIs it the same as a torii?
ANo. A torii marks the entrance to a Shinto shrine, while a sanmon is the gate of a Buddhist temple. It's a quick way to tell them apart, although some places have both.

Background
